Assault charges dropped against Nanticoke man

Assault charges against a man involved in a fatal 2013 crash were dismissed Wednesday after the alleged victim declined to testify. Tyler Duda, 20, will no longer face charges alleging he threatened his ex-girlfriend Kaylee Grodzicki with a knife, cut her finger and slashed the tires of a vehicle belonging to Imarl Daron Lee Wimbush.

Wilkes-Barre police, state police and U.S. Marshals arrested Antoine McNeal, 33, of Wilkes-Barre early Wednesday afternoon on East Northampton Street, police said. McNeal is accused of shooting and killing 20-year-old Brandon Smith outside Smith's family home on West Church Street in Nanticoke in January.

Woman sues nail salon over – disease’

A Nanticoke woman filed suit against a township nail salon Thursday alleging she contracted a “life-threatening disease” because of unsanitary equipment. Krystin Spudis, of 15 Enterprise St., filed suit alleging negligence against X-Press Nails at 850 Sans Souci Parkway, along with the business owners Phuong Lam and Vui Vo.

Emergency crews launch water rescue on Susquehanna River

Emergency crews launched water rescue efforts Saturday night after receiving reports that someone either fell or jumped from the Carey Avenue Bridge connecting Hanover Township and Plymouth Township just before 9:30 p.m. By 10:30 p.m., police confirmed that there were sightings of someone in the river and rescue workers were trying to get a sighting on the victim at the Broadway Street Bridge in Nanticoke. According to personnel at the Broadway Street Bridge, efforts there failed and rescue workers were heading farther downstream toward Shickshinny.

Third suspect arraigned in Mount Pocono home invasion

The third suspect sought in a May 22 home invasion/robbery on Fairview Avenue in Mount Pocono, Richard Nublett Jr. was arraigned this week on charges. Nublett, 30, of Schenectady, N.Y., and co-defendants Joel Contreras, 26, of Nanticoke, and Amaryllis Castillo, 26, of Kingston, are charged with robbery, conspiracy to robbery, burglary, criminal trespassing, theft, unlawful restraint, weapon possession, terroristic threats and simple assault.

Commonwealth Financing Authority approves dozens of grants for county

The authority approved 58 grants ranging from $20,000 for the rehabilitation of a Veterans of Foreign War building in Wyoming to $1 million for acquiring and renovating a new corporate headquarters for Berkshire Hathaway GUARD Insurance Companies in Wilkes-Barre. “The LSA grants remain an integral part of northeastern Pennsylvania's revitalization,” said Sen. John Yudichak, D-Plymouth Township, in a press release.

Fire marshal to determine cause of Friday fire in W-B Twp.

A state police fire marshal will investigate the cause of a fire that damaged an apartment building in Wilkes-Barre Township on Friday night, according to township Assistant Fire Chief Kevin Halecki. No one was hurt in the fire at 533 Church St. but the residents of the building's three apartments were displaced, he said.
